Born on the sea, forged by salt and magic — he found his family before he understood how
Every pirate heard the tale of Lord Balin — the howler of the seas. Diego grew up in that story. What he didn't know was that a different story, older and deeper, had been waiting for him all along.
Diego's mother Catalina was a woman of royalty and power — a Lycan who could shift into a standing white wolf at will, her eyes carrying a deep sea-green glow, her strength like no other. She was found aboard Lord Balin's ship The Moon's Eye after stowing away during a raid, her baby wrapped in her arms.
Lord Balin sensed immediately that Catalina and the child carried something powerful. He kept them aboard. During travel, Catalina gave her life defending the ship from an ambush — shifting fully to protect her child. She made Balin promise to keep Diego safe. The pirate lord was a filthy man but a man of his word.
Diego was raised among werewolves who mocked him for being unable to shift. He had magic they did not, but he wasn't skilled at it yet — so he practiced on the ones who bullied him, got caught, and spent most of his childhood doing ship chores instead of joining battles.
He adopted many talents — to sing, to play instruments, to swoon both men and women in more ways than one. His strategic and storytelling ways of thinking helped many missions succeed. His curiosity often led him somewhere else entirely.
When Diego finally shifted for the first time, he went rampant — nearly murdering the entire crew. Lord Balin cast a binding spell that made shifting impossible until Diego reached a point of control. Each night his body ached. His inner wolf tore at him from confinement.
Balin's response was to make Diego differently strong — book smart, sailor sharp, strategy-minded. He taught him human nature over beast nature. What emerged was the sharpest and wittiest mind aboard the ship.
When the bind was finally removed, Balin gave Diego a mission: go to Wysteria. Gain knowledge. Grow stronger. Come back and challenge him for leadership of the pack and the title of Pirate King.
What Diego did not know — and still has not fully pieced together — is that his father's line connects directly to the Deathfang pack. His father was Luke, younger brother to Deathfang Alpha William. Luke disappeared from the pack to follow love, found Catalina, left her a gift he could not take back, and returned to fight in the ancient war.
When Diego arrived at Wysteria — ambushed, robbed, stranded — it was Frost and Storm who found him first and brought him into the fold. He met Vexra through them. Something about her felt familiar in a way he could not explain.
One night the Moon Goddess reached out to him in a dream and told him he had found his family. Diego has never fully explained how they are related. He did not know himself. But he accepted it without hesitation — by blood and by faith, he is family.
He is self-proclaimed cousin. But blood does not require explanation. The Moon Goddess confirmed what his bones already knew.

Diego has finally retrieved his pirate ship — the vessel that was taken from him the day he arrived in Wysteria, stranded and robbed. He has it back. But something is wrong with it. The ship is corrupted. Possibly hexed, possibly cursed — the nature of it is still unclear. He is in the process of trying to remove whatever has been placed on it. But there is something deeper happening here. Something that goes beyond a simple hex. And sometimes it triggers.
Hopefully not a sickness. But the signs are not reassuring.

"I… I'm being stalked… by a shadow? I don't know what to do—"
Whispers have been spreading around Wysteria regarding a shadow — and this is somehow linked to Diego. The connection is not yet fully understood. Whether the shadow is a consequence of the cursed ship, something older tied to his Deathfang blood, or something that followed him from another realm entirely — no one knows. What is known is that Diego is aware of it. And it is aware of him.
